UK pop singer Olly Alexander wants gayer lyrics in songs

Olly Alexander and Adam LambertOlly Alexander (pictured with Adam Lambert), the openly gay lead singer of British band Years & Years, finds it sad that gay pop stars seldom use male pronouns in any of their songs.

While being interviewed by Digital Spy about his band’s debut album, Communion, he said: "It was important for me to get some male pronouns in some of the songs. So I did it for 'Real and Memo,' and then one song on the deluxe. It is kind of sad to me that we don’t have gay pop stars singing about men using a male pronoun, but that could change hopefully."

And, he added, "I’d like to hear a gay artist express their sexuality in a really open way. That’s something I’ve sort of tried to do a little bit on this album, but to be able to talk about sex is possibly new for gay artists, so I’d like to see that in the mainstream."

Years & Years is starting to earn some serious buzz in the United Kingdom. The group landed the number one spot in the BBC Sound of 2015 poll in January, and had its first UK number one with "King" in March.

And if Alexander looks familiar to some of you, it's because he had a small role as a stalker in the acclaimed British series Skins, and more recently appeared as the vampire Fenton in the series Penny Dreadful.

Based on his acting skills and his music, we think Alexander will definitely go far.
