During Gay Pride celebrations in London this weekend, one intrepid CNN reporter decided scooping a story was more important than getting her facts right.
Correspondent Lucy Pawle, based in England's capital city, spotted an ISIS flag in a sea of rainbows. She spoke with anchor Suzanne Malveaux about what she saw.
“I seem to be the only person who has spotted this, and nobody seems to be raising any questions or pointing it out,” she said. She added that she told police and others, but no one seemed to care.
Had she looked a little closer, or asked the person holding the flag, she would have discovered that the flag satirized ISIS by using depictions of buttplugs and dildos. (Normally, Islamists don't use sex toys as lettering.)
Although there has been no official retraction or apology from CNN, Pawle did retweet some comments on Twitter that called her out for making a mistake.
CNN removed the video from its site. However, the clip lives on thanks to YouTube.
