Reality-based musical about porn biz launches off-Broadway

Pretty Filthy

There's a new show off-Broadway that is like nothing you've ever seen before. Pretty Filthy is a reality-based show about the L.A. porn industry. Oh, and it's a musical!

The show was first created by L.A.’s Center Theater Group, which interviewed several people from within the adult industry before creating the play. Bess Wohl worked the information into a narrative, and Michael Friedman was brought in to create the music.

The concept has been likened to A Chorus Line, with XXX performers, promoters and agents talking about their lives and insecurities in an increasingly competitive profession.

The play even explores how stars choose their porn names. Becky, for example went with Taylor St. Ives — “like, you know, the, um, Apricot Face Scrub?”

Talent agent Shy Love explains to a young female newbie how she can prolong her life as a porn star: “So, I said, you’re brunette / small boobs, then you’re blonde / small boobs, then we go blonde / big boobs. And then when you’re done with blonde and brunette big boobs, then you add anal.” Fun!

The show, though mostly focused on straight stars, does include a story line about Bobby, aka Dick Everhard, who is transitioning into gay porn. He thinks being gay-4-pay is an option because the pay is better and his ego gets stroked as much as his cock.

The show is playing at the Abrons Art Center until the end of February.
