Gays can marry in Cancun

Thanks to a quirk in the local civil code, gay travelers can get legally married in Cancun, Cozumel, and other resort areas in the Mexican Caribbean.

The first marriages will take place this month. The International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association is hoping to work out special deals with airlines and hotels to help gays who want to take advantage of the loophole.

Same-sex marriages are possible in the region of Mexico known as Quintana Roo, "thanks to a legal gap in the Civil Code," which speaks only to "people interested in getting married" without specifying gender.

“If it's not prohibited, then it is allowed and legal,” activist Patricia Novelo said, who pushed the issue in order to wed her partner.

Mexico City already has legal same-sex marriage; over 1,200 same-sex couples have married there so far.

And in most of the US gay unions are still not recognized. Hmmm ...
