Queer superhero comic up for award

Spandex, gay superheroes'Spandex,' a comic about a group of gay superheroes, has been nominated for the comic book industry equivalent of the People's Choice Awards.

Martin Eden said he was "shocked" to be nominated for an Eagle Award in the category of Best British Color Comic Book. "I'm so proud of my comic and really trying to do things that have never been done in a comic before," he added. "I'm up against some big titles in my category, so it'd be exciting if the indie guy won!"

Spandex is set in Brighton, UK, and features a trans crime fighter Liberty, the Wonder Women-esque Diva, and twins Butch and Mr Muscles.

Eden explained: "Gay people in comics are fairly under-represented, but this new comic aims to address that."

Does it ever. The latest issue has the Spandex team in Japan where they battle the Pink Ninjas, take down a terrifying Gayzilla and recruit Neon, a gay, fluorescent ninja.

Now this would make a most excellent summer movie.
