Cuba considers gay rights

Cuba considers going gay friendlyIs it possible that Cuba may be a tad more progressive when it comes to recognizing gay and lesbian relationships than the United States of America?

In honor of the International Day Against Homophobia last Saturday, the Cuban government held one of the largest meetings of gay activists in the island's history. Even Mariela Castro, the current President's daughter, made an appearance.

"This is a very important moment for us, the men and women of Cuba, because for the first time we can gather in this way and speak profoundly and with scientific basis about these topics," said Ms Castro. She is the director of Cuba's Centre for Sexual Education, and vigorously defends gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans people in the Communist state.

Cuban state television even aired the 2005 film "Brokeback Mountain." [more]

This is not to say that Cuba is completely pro-homo by any means. Discrimination is still commonplace and gay rights groups are currently banned. Former President Fidel Castro once sent gay men to labor camps to be 're-educated;' he believed  hard work would rid homosexuals of their "counter-revolutionary tendencies."

But the Cuban government is currently considering a change to the country's family law that would put members of same-sex unions on a par with heterosexuals.

It's your move, Mr Bush!
