Nudity and politics

Racy art and local politics just don't mix. At least not in the prudish United States. In Spain, however, where sex can be both silly and serious, they seem to make the perfect match. So suggest two news items this week about naked politicians on opposite sides of the Atlantic.

First, from Spain comes news that political candidate Albert Rivera is advertising his cause in the nude via campy campaign posters. The ads show a naked Rivera covering his genitals alongside a caption that reads, "We don't care what language you speak, or what clothes you wear. We only care about you."

According to the United Press International, the 26-year-old swimmer and political hopeful says his playful campaign for a new anti-nationalist party in Catalonia represents a serious attempt at bridging the gap between politicians and the local working class.

There's no room for playfulness in American politics, however, according to the Glenwood Springs Post Independent -- especially not the kind that involves playing with yourself.

According to the Colorado newspaper, sheriff's candidate Rick Magnuson has admitted masturbating into a hole in the Mojave Desert while being filmed during his 40th birthday. While Magnuson insists the 12-minute film -- shot from behind at a distance of several yards -- is an innocuous and artistic work of self-expression, voters in Aspen, Colo., are not likely to agree.

"In life, everyone will have problems and issues," Magnuson said. "The healthiest, most therapeutic way to deal with issues is through art. It's much more healthy than sedating yourself. I would encourage everyone to use art in their lives."

"Aspen is very accepting," countered one local resident, "but that's pretty strange."
