By now you've probably heard the story about how the website Gawker relied on an unnamed escort in order to out a married man.
The married man was neither a rabid, anti-gay politician, nor a homophobic priest. He was, however, a media exec working for one of Gawker's rivals. His name was listed. His texts were posted. Even his picture was shared.
And though heavily criticized for the story, many of the blogs and news sites taking Gawker to task continued to post the man's name and his picture. (We have chosen not to do so.)
Through it all, the name of the blackmailing escort - he demanded help in an ongoing battle with a housing department, otherwise he would reveal the details of the planned hook-up - was left out. Well played, Gawker (not!).
Three things have happened since the story broke: the story has since been removed, with Gawker founder Nick Denton issuing an apology and admitting the story lacked any real merit; executive editor Tommy Craggs and editor-in-chief Max Read, both who continue to stand behind the story, quit in protest of Dentin's decision; and finally, the name of the escort has been shared, and the guy is a complete crackpot.
Meet Leif Derek Truitt, who you might know better as Brodie Sinclair. He used to work with sites like Raging Stallion, Next Door and Cocky Boys.
He's been out of the industry for some time, but he's still having sex for money as an escort. That's how he met the man who paid him $1250 only to be outed for his trouble (without even getting a handyjay!)
Aside from blackmailing someone, Truitt has a lot of other issues he may need help with. He's a conspiracy theorist, and goes out on some pretty big limbs.
He says that President Barack Obama is, literally, the “son of the Devil.” His proof: since 1980 the numbers “6-6-6″ have been drawn 25 times in the Illinois state pick-three lottery; on 11 of those days, Obama had made a public speech. (Wow, it is now so obvious!)
"The National Emergency code in Europe is 999," he shared on Facebook. "Remember Satan does everything backwards." Um, okay.
“I’m just a guy who is tired of injustice and corruption,” he explained in a recent interview. He admitted he was the escort in the Gawker story, and later added on Facebook: "I'm at war with this Government and any (hypocrite) that's closely associated with it (sic) they are all corrupt hypocrites that don't believe in shit behind the scenes (sic) I seen this first hand," and among the many links he includes, he shares one that calls out his victim for being Jewish.
In an interesting twist, GotNews is now asking whether Gawker was scammed by a man who was really looking to promote his conspiracy theories. When the news site reached out to Brodie, he seemed more interested in talking about his many theories than in explaining the blackmail accusation or the original issue he seemed to be having over housing. You can read the article here.
Now, if you have always wanted to spend a night with a gun-toting crazy man, he'll be needing the work. For everyone else who uses sites like Rent Boy, there are lots of other guys you can choose from.
