It takes more than just a pretty face and a big schlong to get into the porn industry (though it certainly helps!).
Most models rely on someone who understands the adult business. Someone with the connections needed to get quality jobs. Someone who can keep a model on track, getting him to his shoots on time and pushing him to keep in porn star shape.
One of the best known talent management companies is FabScout, which has been in business for almost 10 years, and boasts some of the biggest names in porn on its roster.
So for those of you looking to get into the biz, or more likely just curious about what goes on behind the scenes, founder Howard Andrew was kind enough to answer a few questions.
BananaGuide: The big question: what exactly does FabScout do?
FabScout is a Talent Management Company and we currently represent around 100 of the most sought after male models in the adult Industry. We recruit and cultivate the best male talent available today.
How did the idea for the company come about?
It is a funny story actually. Rick Ford (Dirk Yates) was a customer of mine at a club I was managing, and wanted to hire one of my dancers to do a jack-off scene and I helped make that happen. He then asked me if I would be interested in helping him recruit talent and from there the seed was planted. To this day, I still credit him with helping to create what FabScout has become.

And why do you think you've been so successful?
From the beginning myself, Gio Caruso and Matt Lock have all worked very hard to build the business as a reputable and honest company amongst a sometimes difficult industry that has a lot of trust issues. First and foremost, we always do our best to treat the models with honesty and respect. Our goal is to keep them safe and out of trouble as best we can. We also have that same approach with the studios we cast our models with and they know that when they book a FabScout model, that model is prepared and ready to do his best. It is pretty simple: treat everyone with respect and your business will thrive.
Who are some of the big names of gay porn that you've represented?
That is a hard question, because we have represented so many over the years. To name a few: Brad Star, Damien Crosse, Bruno Bond, Jackson Wild, Sebastian Young, Ryan Raz, Tommy Defendi, Brandon Lewis, Drake Jaden, Christian Wilde, Trent Diesel, Gavin Waters, Drake Jaden, RJ Danvers, Bobby Clark, Andrew Justice, Jesse Santana, Matthew Rush, Jimmy Fanz and many others.

What is the hardest part of your job?
To be honest, it is dealing with the "model-drama." When you represent as many models as we do you have to deal with many different personalities, personal issues and insecurities that many of them have. Additionally, there is what I call the "babysitting factor" and that means we need to constantly be checking in on the models to make sure they do not miss flights, show up on time, still look like their photos, etc. It is a lot of work trying to keep the peace amongst all these guys on a daily basis.
When it comes to models, what are you looking for in a man? What makes a good FabScout model?
To be successful as a FabScout Model and in this industry the guys need to be outgoing and friendly. Of course they must be in great physical shape too. When they walk into a room they need to make eye contact with their director and/or scene partner and come across as sincere and honest. Leave the bad attitudes behind because we have no patience for them and neither do the companies we cast our guys with.
Physically it is important these days that the guys look real! That means stop all the plucking and tweezing, stop shaving off your body hair and you must have pubic hair and armpit hair (hair is back now)!

What are three must have qualities for a model who is looking for a career in porn?
Number one would be to be personable and friendly to your scene partners, directors, crew and our office staff. Number two would be to maintain a great physical appearance that fits your body type. And last but certainly not least would be to stay away from all the drama, drugs and alcohol.
Is there anything that really surprises new models when they get started in the industry? Anything you have to warn them about?
There are so many. But, I think most are really surprised to see that Porn is really a job and as with any job it has good and bad parts about it. It isn’t as glamorous and sexy on set as they thought it might be.
What is FabScout's position on safe sex versus bareback porn?
We have a strict policy that we will not cast our models with any company that is 100% Bareback and will never put a model in a bareback scene. We are steadfast in our view that condom only scenes are in the best interest of our models health and safety.
