As porn sites struggle to make a profit, they have to come up with new and interesting ways to keep surfers coming back. xHamster is hoping that by adding a non-porn title to its catalog, it'll be able to get more people to check out the site.
It has offered to help get season three of Sense8 produced. The show was canceled after two seasons on Netflix, though creator Lana Wachowski said she is still writing a third season and is hoping to somehow get it made.
xHamster CEO Alex Hawkins made the offer to help in an open letter, and claimed it was sincere.
"We know it’s unconventional, but we want to bring it back -- on xHamster," Hawkins said. "We’re not talking about a parody, or something less than, but an actual revival of the series."
Sense8 is a science fiction series about a group of individuals who are mentally and emotionally linked through a psychic bond. Characters on the show reflected various sexualities, making it popular within the LGBT community.
However, Netflix said that the number of actual viewers did not justify the cost to make the show and it was cancelled. After a massive campaign by fans, Netflix announced a two-hour series finale would be produced. It will be released sometime in 2018.
Hawkins argued that the show's open take on sex and sexuality made it perfect for his site.
He said xhamster had a "long history of fighting for the rights of sexual speech, and non-normative sexuality… [We] continue to use our audience to speak up against repressive anti-LGBTQ laws in the US and abroad, and for sex ed in public schools, Planned Parenthood, and the rights of sex workers.
"We know we’re an unlikely home. But five years ago, people laughed at the idea of Netflix producing original series. We think that our time, like yours, has come."
We've never watched the show, but with all this fuss maybe it's worth checking out.
