Ellen DeGeneres named Medal Of Freedom honoree

Medal of FreedomYesterday, the White House announced the recipients of the Presidential Medal Of Freedom, which is the nation’s highest civilian honor.

It is given to people “who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” 

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres is one of the honorees.

After listing several of DeGeneres' accomplishments -- from hosting her own talk show to her role as the "forgetful but unforgettable" fish in Finding Nemo and Finding Dory -- the committee behind the medal revealed she was chosen because "in her work and in her life, she has been a passionate advocate for equality and fairness."
 
Other recipients include Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Robert DeNiro, Tom Hanks, Bill and Melinda Gates, Bruce Springsteen and Diana Ross.
