Alabama's homophobic chief justice just lost his job

Roy MooreRoy Moore is no more! The loudly anti-gay chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court has been suspended without pay for the remainder of his term. And, due to state law, he will not be eligible to run again.

The Alabama Court of the Judiciary made the decision yesterday, saying he was guilty of all six charges brought against him by the state's Judicial Inquiry Commission. (The charges stemmed from his order to Alabama's 68 probate judges to ignore the US Supreme Court's same-sex marriage ruling.)

This is not the first time Moore has been removed from office; in 2003 he lost the same position after refusing to remove the Ten Commandments monument from the state Supreme Court building. He was re-elected by voters in 2012.

“The Court of the Judiciary has done the citizens of Alabama a great service by suspending Roy Moore from the bench,” Richard Cohen, president of the Southern Poverty law Center, said in a statement. “He disgraced his office and undermined the integrity of the judiciary by putting his personal religious beliefs above his sworn duty to uphold the U.S. Constitution.

“Moore was elected to be a judge, not a preacher. It's something that he never seemed to understand. The people of Alabama who cherish the rule of law are not going to miss the Ayatollah of Alabama.”

The suspension will last until his term runs out in 2019. He can still appeal the decision to the state's Supreme Court.
