Aussie survey says: Many gays are open to open relationships

A survey in Victoria, Australia has found that gay people in the city are just as likely to be in open relationships as they are to be in monogamous ones.

Researchers found that 32% of the 2886 questioned were in open relationships, compared to 31% who said they were monogamous. Another 23% said they were only having casual sex, well a less than ecstatic 14%, were not having sex at all.

Other interesting tidbits revealed in the survey included:

-48% said they used apps like Grindr to meet other guys, while 29% met men in bars, and 28% found hook-ups at the sauna;

-22.8% have been tested for HIV three or more times in the last year;

-5.1% of HIV negative men are on PrEP.

"In these results we can see how testing behaviour is changing," Colin Batrouney, the Victorian Aids Council’s director health promotion, policy, and communications, said. "The proportion of gay men who have had at least three HIV tests in the previous 12 months has almost doubled over the past five years.

"Testing every three months is particularly important if you’re having sex with a lot of different guys, and these look like the kind of men who are testing more frequently."

How these findings would translate into other gay communities around the world is, if course, impossible to tell, though we suspect we'd find similar results in other major Western cities.

We're just most excited knowing that we have even better odds of scoring when Down Under than we ever expected!
