Yesterday morning,
Charlie Sheen announced that he has been HIV+ since 2011.
The actor revealed the news during an interview with Matt Lauer on NBC's Today show. He claimed to have spent almost $10 million over the past several years to keep people from sharing his illness with the media.
"I have to put a stop to this onslaught, this barrage of attacks and of subtruths and very harmful and mercurial stories that are about me threatening the health of so many others; that couldn't be further from the truth," said Sheen.
He said that all of his sexual partners were advised of his condition before any sexual contact.
However, adult film actress Bree Olson claimed Sheen had not been open with her before they had sex. On The Howard Stern Show yesterday she said that "[he] never said anything, ever."
Olson added: "'I'm clean,' he told me. ... He doesn't even value my life." During her interview with Stern, she said that she was not HIV+.
As for Sheen, he is currently taking four pills a day and has an "undetectable level" of HIV in his blood.
"If there was one guy on this planet to contract this that's going to deliver a cure, it's me. It's me. Seriously," Sheen said. "I'm not going to be the poster man for this, but I will not shun away from responsibilities and opportunities that drive me to helping others."
Last week. Daily Mail Online claimed to have details of an HIV-positive Hollywood actor who had slept with almost 50 female porn stars; the site did not name the actor. There was also news that the National Enquirer was going to out Sheen's health status later this week.
Sheen will either help reinvigorate the fight against HIV in a culture that's become too complacent, or he'll mess things up with wild claims of Tiger Blood cures that don't exist.
