Rosie O'Donnell has revealed that she wanted to come out in 1992. She even announced her sexuality in an interview with Cosmopolitan magazine, but the interview was edited to leave out the confession.
In an interview with Marlo Thomas posted on YouTube, O’Donnell explained that she told the Cosmo reporter that she was gay. Later, Editor Helen Gurley Brown removed that quote.
“[The reporter] said, ‘Are you gay?’ and I said ‘yes,’” O'Donnell explained. “[Helen] was protecting me. At that time it would have been a huge issue. I think it’s changed a lot… [Now] it’s much more common and people are much more used to it.”
O’Donnell didn't publicly come out for another 10 years, when in 2002 she announced she was a lesbian during a New York stand-up show.
