Behind the Candelabra, the Liberace biopic, was a huge success for HBO. It actually attracted the most viewers for an original HBO movie in 10 years, with 2.4 million people tuning in to check it out.
One of the most notable characters was that of plastic surgeon Dr. Startz, played by an only partially recognizable Rob Lowe. The doctor obviously is a big fan of plastic surgery himself, judging from his uttra-tight, expressionless face. He's also the one responsible for getting Liberace's lover Scott Thorson (Matt Damon) hooked on the "California diet," which consists largely of amphetamines.
"I wanted him to be at once repellant and engaging, if that’s possible," Lowe said of his character. "He reminded me of a certain genus and species of guy that you would see at Laker games during the Magic Johnson era. He looks almost like a transgendered Bee Gee. You know what I mean? ... But I wanted his voice to be really macho, like maybe he was a transplant New Yorker who just bought in way too hard in the LA scene. That’s my backstory for him.”
