Although many younger readers may not recognize the name, actor Jim Nabors (pictured, left), who played the half-wit soldier Gomer Pyle in the classic 60's sitcom of the same name, and who had a celebrated singing career, has come out of the closet.
"I'm 82 and [partner Stan Cadwallader is] in his 60s and so we've been together for 38 years and I'm not ashamed of people knowing, it's just that it was such a personal thing, I didn't tell anybody," Nabors said. "I'm very happy that I've had a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed. And, what can I tell you, I'm just very happy."
The two got married legally in Washington State last December. The ceremony was private, and only a few friends were invited.
Rumors followed the actor later in his career, and at one point he was even linked to Rock Hudson. Nabors explained that particular rumor was started by "middle-aged homosexuals who live in Huntington Beach" who sent out a joke invitation to their marriage. At the time, though, Rock Hudson was still a popular actor and gay rumors were considered unhealthy for his career; the two were forced to end their friendship to protect Hudson's position as a leading man.
Nabors now plans to return to his quiet life, and has no plans to become an activist for gay rights. "I'm not a debater. And everybody has their own opinion about this and actually I'm not an activist so I've never gotten involved in any of this," Nabors said.
Proof that it's never too late to come out of the closet.
