Is Bruno bad for gays?

BrunoEveryone's a critic.

Gay rights media group Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) thinks Sacha Baron Cohen's character Bruno is too over the top and may give non-queer types the wrong impression about their gay brethren. They are asking the film's producers to add a pro-gay message to the end of the film (such as: gays may appear less stereotypical in real life?).

GLAAD spokesman Rashad Robinson explained: "We have very mixed emotions about the movie. Those of us who saw the film agreed that you can't critique it as a single film because it's more like 90 minutes of individual sketches. Some are funny and hit their mark but others hit the gay community instead. ... This movie does not unmask stereotypes… As someone who sat at the back of a focus group audience… I felt they were laughing at us at times."

Universal replied: "Bruno uses provocative comedy to powerfully shed light on the absurdity of many kinds of intolerance and ignorance, including homophobia."

However, it has been rumored that some scenes were actually cut from the movie in order to remove some seriously offensive material to the LGBT community.
