Ever since Manhunt co-founder Jonathan Crutchley came out in support of John McCain -- going so far as to donate $2300 to McCain's presidential campaign -- members of the personals site have asked themselves how loyal they should be. Even after Crutchley apologized and claimed to have seen the error of his ways, the horned up masses were considering other websites to satisfy their online needs.
Steve Cruz was no exception, feeling politically slighted by a site he had, as a consumer, once supported. Worse still, he was recently asked to take part in an event being sponsored by Manhunt. What was he to do?
Cruz raised the issue on his blog: "So many of my friends and some of my fans wonder, Steve, how could you go and promote a website that supported directly or indirectly an anti-gay conservative agenda? How can you help raise $3000 to protect gay marriage one weekend then do this the next?
"Well guys, I am still conflicted, but here's what would have happened if I pulled out. The club would have suffered. And someone would have been stiffed the cost of my airline travel which was booked and non refundable. Do I do that to the fans and club owners? No I can't. And then I considered the Manhunt employees who hired me, managed my trips and worked hard for me to get 4 gigs this year... they didn't have to book me. Make the weekend a hell for them? In many ways we're in the same predicament."
That doesn't mean he has forgiven or forgotten ...
"Now that I fulfilled my professional obligations and I (am) just a consumer again - I am mostly (sic) likely done with Manhunt, at least for now until the dust settles and they can convince me it's safe to log on again... for now it's log off."
Given that Manhunt employs and is managed by many good-hearted men we're sure they'll come up with a way for the site to redeem itself. Let the healing begin ...
