U.S. President Bush today nominated White House Counsel Harriet Miers, 60, to be associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Miers was Bush's personal attorney in Texas and joined him at the White House in 2001 as staff secretary. She was promoted to deputy chief of staff before Bush named her counsel after his reelection last November. While she has no experience as a judge this would not be the first time a non-judge was appointed to the high court.
There is little public evidence of where Miers stands on social issues, particularly controversial areas such as abortion, gay marriage or pornography. The nomination is being criticized by right-wingers who view Miers as not sufficiently devoted to the conservative cause. If confirmed, she would become the third woman to serve on the Supreme Court.
