Could a gay porn star replace a Russian Empress?

A petition is circulating in Ukraine to remove the statue of Catherine the Great, and replace it with one of former gay porn star Billy Herrington. In fact, enough signatures have been collected to ensure the request is considered by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to the petition: “Catherine II is a controversial historical figure whose actions caused great damage to Ukrainian statehood and culture. The very fact of erecting this monument was a terrible mistake, and every day of its continued existence signals that Odesa is in the zone of Russian cultural influence. It's time to change that. A monument project is proposed where the actor Billy Herrington will sit at the bar with a bottle of beer.”

The disdain for anything representing Russia is understandable, especially with Vladimir Putin sending in armed  forces to bring Ukraine under Russian control.

The statue of Herrington would send a “clear signal that Ukraine supports the LGBT community” and a “loud statement that Odesa is not some provincial town of the Russian Empire."

Billy Herrington was a fan favourite in the US, and was named COLT Man of the Year in 2000. In 2002, he took home the Adult Erotic Gay Video Award for the Best Group Sex Scene.

He was also so popular in Japan that an action figure was made in his likeness.

He passed away from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in 2018.

The chances of this statue ever being built are slim. A similar attempt in April to name an alley after him failed. We can't figure out why Ukraine is so fixated on Herrington, but anything that puts gay porn in the spotlight is a good thing.
