Fire Island is the gay reworking of Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice we've all been waiting for.
Created by streamer Hulu, the movie follows Noah (played by Joel Kim Booster) and his friends during a week-long vacation to Fire Island. When they arrive, Noah’s best friend Howie (Bowen Yang) falls for a handsome doctor, played by James Scully.
This leads to a clash between Noah and one of the doctor's friends, a Mr. Darcy figure played by Conrad Ricamora.
The entirely LGBT+ cast is rounded out by the likes of Margaret Cho, Matt Rogers, and Zane Phillips.
Booster also wrote the script.
“Pride and Prejudice feels so relevant to gay social mores,” Booster said. “Whenever I see that reflected in a Victorian novel, that’s so funny to me.”
He added in another inerview: “I want people – especially gay men, especially queer people – to walk away from the movie happy that they’re gay. I think that there are so many movies about the gay experience that are fraught with people who are unsure if they’re happy being gay or struggling with coming out…
“I want people to come away from this movie feeling the joy of our experiences and that it’s not all tragic. There are many of us out here living our lives joyfully.”
Fire Island will be released on Hulu on June 3 in the US, and carried on Disney Plus’ Star brand everywhere else.
