Lil Nas X proved he is no one hit wonder when he released his new single "MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)". It was a massive success, and debuted at the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts this year.
Social justice advocate Jonathan P. Higgins said the song was revolutionary, with its unabashed celebration of gay sex.
"I was not a huge fan of Old Town Road when it first came out," Higgins said. "However, with [MONTERO], immediately — literally the first time I heard it — I was like, 'Wow, this is extremely catchy.'
"But I think the other part of it is ... the first song of its kind to have both, I would say, a mainstream Black rap, hip-hop artist very, very flagrantly talking about their interactions with another man. Because ultimately, I mean, [Lil Nas X] tweeted a couple of days ago ... I finessed a number one song about having a hook up with a guy. So it's very much in your face. And I think it's, in a lot of ways, revolutionary and very radical."
Lil Nas X, even though just 21, has some very specific ideas about sex. He had some pointed words in response to a fan question about whether he preferred to top or bottom.
“I get this question a lot," he replied. "I’ve never been a bunk bed kinda guy, I like king-sized beds, I like queen-sized beds. But for real, all jokes aside, with this top and bottom shit in the gay community, it has become a huge form of misogyny, and it’s like how you n*ggas misogynists? You’re all gay, you’re f*ggots. We’re all f*ggots.”
Certainly not as eloquently put as we'd expect from a wordsmith. (And why can't people just fuck in the position they want to without it becoming all political?)
He recently released an a cappella version of “Montero” which has already been viewed over 6 million times on Youtube. He dresses up as nine different characters, and recreates the drums, guitar, and more with his voice.
