Taylor Swift becoming a major LGBT ally

Taylor SwiftYes, we know some of you love yourselves some Taylor Swift. The rest of us, well, not so much. Still, we have to give props to the pop star for her increasingly vocal stance on gay rights.

For most of her career, Swift has remained relatively mum on all things political. She was more interested in taking on her exes -- former lovers and former friends -- with catchy little numbers like "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" (about Jake Gyllenhaal), "Back to December" (Taylor Lautner), and "Bad Blood" (Katy Perry).

Then last October something changed. Swift not only called on her fans to vote in the upcoming US elections, she threw her support behind Democrats Phil Bredesen, candidate for Senate, and Jim Cooper for the US House.

“In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions," she wrote on Instagram. "I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG.

“I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent.”

Donald Trump responded to the news by saying he liked Swift's music 25 percent less.

Swift now seems to have embraced her newly politicized self. She recently called on Senator Lamar Alexander to support passage of the Equality Act. And this week she dropped a pro-LGBT song in time for Pride month.

“You Need To Calm Down” calls out the haters, basically telling them to get a life. And she references the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation with the line "Why are you mad when you could be GLAAD?" The organization saw an immediately increase in donations.

“Taylor Swift is one of the world’s biggest pop stars,” Anthony Ramos, director of talent engagement at GLAAD, said in an emailed statement. “The fact that she continues to use her platform and music to support the LGBTQ community ... is a true sign of being an ally. ‘You Need to Calm Down’ is the perfect Pride anthem, and we’re thrilled to see Taylor standing with the LGBTQ community to promote inclusivity, equality, and acceptance this Pride month.”

Miss Swift, you're growing on us!
