Another gay musician gets a big screen biopic

Boy George

Move over Freddie Mercury and Sir Elton John, because you're about to get some company!

Following the huge success of Mercury's Bohemian Rhapsody, which has already banked over $900 million, and the buzz about John's Rocketman, which opens this weekend, it seems producers want to cash in on the big-name music biopic biz. And it seems another major gay icon is at the top of the list.

MGM has opted to explore the life of Boy George, probably one of the most successful gender-fluid artists to ever hit the stage. Sacha Gervasi will write and direct the film, with George on hand to executive produce.

The movie will follow Boy George as he struggles to move beyond his working-class roots to become part of Culture Club, one of the biggest pop groups of the 80s. Whether or not the film will explore more recent events and struggles in the pop star's life has not been revealed.

Gervasi called Boy George “a trailblazer and a true original. In the London clubs of the ’80s, George was impossible to miss and everyone knew he would be a star long before the world had ever heard a note of Culture Club’s iconic songs. As you can imagine, George’s life story is wickedly entertaining, yet also poignant and inspiring. I’m both honored and excited to be the one to guide it onto the big screen.”

“A MOVIE! [MGM Studios] Thrilling!” Boy George wrote on Instagram.

Can't wait for the film? George wrote two best-selling memoirs. Harper Collins published his first, Take It Like a Man, in 1995. And in 2005, he released Straight, which starts where the previous book ended.

Culture Club is still making new music together. See if you're still a fan ...
