Even while he starred in one of the biggest gay-centic sitcoms in history, one
Will and Grace actor was not out of the closet publicly. In fact, it took Sean Hayes five years after the show ended its first run before he was ready to share the news with fans.
Hayes, who plays the over-the-tip Jack McFarland, explained why he waited to come out.
“It was a scary time,”
he admitted. “We got death threats, [people] could find out where I lived, and I was playing a gay character in a big hit show.
"I was too scared. I wasn’t looking to be an activist of any kind. I didn’t have the courage and the strength at such a young age to speak on behalf of the gay community.”
Out, older and married, Hayes says he's happier now that he has "nothing to hide anymore."
