Why did Sacha Baron Cohen donate to an anti-gay group?

Eyebrows were raised this week when it was revealed that Sacha Baron Cohen's series, Who is America?, gave $200 to the Foundation for Moral Law, a group that actively campaigns against same-sex marriage and abortion.

The donation was made as part of the show's effort to secure an appearance by homophobic politician Roy Moore. Moore got to choose where the money would go.

The series features Cohen in different disguises as he tries to expose conservative figures as fools and bigots. Sarah Palin, Dick Cheney and Joe Arpaio were some of the people tricked.

During Moore's appearance  Cohen used a "pedophile detector." After waving it over Moore, it beeped.

The failed US Senate candidate then sued Cohen for defamation and emotional distress. The lawsuit is seeking $95m in damages, claiming Moore "suffered extreme emotional distress" as a result of "being falsely portrayed as a sex offender and paedophile" on the show.

It was from court papers that the payment of $200 was revealed.

No, the Foundation didn't need the extra money to promote its right-wing agenda; that said, maybe it was worth it just to put a sexual predator in his place.
