Ellen talks to the Alabama farmer who protested Roy Moore

On Tuesday, much of the United States was on edge as Alabama took to the polls to vote for a US Senator. One of the men on the ballot was Roy Moore, an outspoken and delusional homophobe who, when he was in his thirties, was banned from a local mall for harassing under-aged girls.

One of the people speaking out against Moore was Alabama peanut farmer Nathan Mathis. His daughter, Patti Sue, was a lesbian. Sadly, because of all the bigotry she faced -- and yes, her father admitted his own role in bullying her -- she committed suicide.

Mathis said it was time attitudes changed, and Moore was not the man to do it.

Luckily, Moore didn't get in. Gay-friendly Democrat, Doug Jones, won by over 20,000 votes.

Mathis, like many, was more than happy about the result.

“I’m very, very happy we didn’t get Roy Moore,” Mathis said. “I sure am. I’m very happy about that. It will be so much better for our country that Roy Moore is not up there. It will be so much better. We would have had a mess if we’d had Roy Moore in the United States Senate. You’d never know which wall he would have come off the next day.”

Of course, Moore himself is a cantankerous old goat and has so far refused to concede, In fact, he blamed his "possible" loss on the LGBT community.

“Today, we no longer recognize the universal truth that God is the author of our life and liberty," Moore whined. "Abortion, sodomy, and materialism have taken the place of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

Sounds like someone needs a nap.

Well, as for Mathis, he's become a bit of a hero and the face of what is possible in the normally ultra-conservative state. He even got an invite to chat with Ellen DeGeneres.

"I protested in honor of my daughter, Patti Sue Mathis, who was gay, she committed suicide, and I just said, I wonder how Patti would feel today," he told the talk show host. "Here's a man running for United States Senate, who said that gay people are perverts...That's why I did what I did."
