Christmas is about to get a little bit more jolly for some of you, as Pfizer has now made a generic version of its erection aid Viagra available in the US.
No, the company did not do this out of the goodness of its heart; it wanted to be the first company to hit the market after the Food and Drug Administration approved generic Viagra for sale in the States (nearly two decades after the drug was first approved).
The new drug will not look the same, being sold as a “little white pill” instead of Viagra's customary blue. It will also cost half as much at $32.50 per pill (versus Viagra's $65 retail price). And the name does not as easily slide off the tongue; you'll need to ask for sildenafil citrate.
Of course, it won't be long before other companies enter the market with their own versions of sildenafil citrate. One company, an Israeli firm called Teva, actually plans to have the generic drug ready later this month. It has not yet revealed how much it will cost.
As more companies enter the market, the consumer price of sildenafil citrate is expected to fall dramatically.
"Cost has been a tremendous issue for patients. Many patients have been unable to obtain the medication since insurance companies don't pay for it and out-of-pocket costs are astronomical,"
explained Dr. Aaron Katz, chairman of urology at NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, NY. "The hope is that [the introduction of generics] will reduce the cost, and patients will have greater access to Viagra, which has been an important medication for healthy men with erectile dysfunction."
So next time you're sitting on Santa's lap, that probably won't be a candy cane in his pocket!
