Hello Again is a movie and a musical we didn't know we were waiting for.
It is loosely based on a 19th century German drama called Reigen, which scrutinized the sexual morals and class ideology of its day through a series of encounters between pairs of characters (shown before or after a sexual encounter). It was eventually released as La Ronde in Vienna in 1920.
Michael John LaChiusa adapted the play for off-Broadway. As with the original, he created a series of stories, each taking place in a different decade of the 20th century and exploring 10 different love affairs.
Well, a movie musical has been created and will be released this month. And don't worry, there is a lot of queer content!
For example, Tyler Blackburn plays Jack, a kept boy for an older, closeted Carl (T.R. Knight). Their story takes place on the Titanic. (We wonder how that ends!) Later, Jack returns -- though as a different version of himself -- in the 1970s where he hooks up with Robert (Cheyenne Jackson), an artist he meets at a disco.
In another story, Robert hooks up with Sally (Audra McDonald), who would really rather be with Ruth (Martha Plimpton), a workaholic senator.
"I just watched the screening and the first thing that came to my mind is that it was just -- it was like a poem," explained Jackson. "It was like this dreamy, run-on sentence of love and it resonating through time. Love is fleeting. Passion is fleeting. It's often just hanging onto it. Savor it. Because, as you see at the end of every single sequence, it’s done. It's over."
