Author turns to crowdfunding to publish book deemed "too gay"

Matt Cain has had no luck getting his novel, The Madonna of Bolton, published.

The book follows Charlie Matthews a nine-year-old obsessed with Madonna. His obsession, "sees him through some tough times in life: being persecuted at school; fitting in at a posh university; a glamorous career in London; finding boyfriends; getting rid of boyfriends; growing up and family heartbreak."

However, Cain said publishers were uncomfortable with the book and called it "too niche."

Now Cain is not some poser behind a keyboard; the editor for gay magazine Attitude has written two successful -- and published -- novels featuring straight protagonists. He was even offered book deals based on these books. But for 12 years, The Madonna of Bolton just couldn't find a home.

He finally decided to try crowdfunding site Unbound -- which focuses solely on books -- to raise money to publish the novel himself. The venture was a huge success and he raised the money he was looking for. In fact, The Madonna of Bolton was the fastest funded book on Unbound to date.

A release date has not been determined at this time.
