The Internet is all abuzz that seemingly homophobic rapper, Tyler, the Creator, is planning on coming out of the closet when his new album drops on July 21, 2017.
Lyrics from several of the upcoming singles have allegedly been leaked, and if they are the real deal then Tyler is admitting to being sexually attracted to the fellas.
For example, on “I Ain’t Got Time!” he says: “Next line will have ’em like ‘Whoa’ / I been kissing white boys since 2004.”
And on "Garden Shed" he cryptically raps: "That was real love I was in / Ain’t no reason to pretend / All my friends was lost / They couldn’t read the signs / I didn’t want to talk / I tell ’em my location and they ain’t want to walk.”
However, in the past he was criticized for repeatedly using words like fag, faggot and gay in his work. In 2011, he claimed there was nothing homophobic in his lyric choice.
“I’m not homophobic. I just think ’faggot’ hits and hurts people,” he claimed. “It hits. And ’gay’ just means you’re stupid. I don’t know, we don’t think about it, we’re just kids. We don’t think about that shit. But I don’t hate gay people. I don’t want anyone to think I’m homophobic.”
It is also telling that he has been openly supportive of queer hip hop artists. When Frank Ocean came out, Tyler tweeted: “My big brother finally fucking did that. Proud of that n*gga cause I know that shit is difficult.”
So it is possible Tyler, the Creator is about to reveal to the world he is gay or bi or sexually fluid. It is also possible this is nothing more than a publicity stunt to get people talking. We hope it's the former, because if it's the latter then he really is a homophobic jerk.
