In this week's WTF file: American Spanish language broadcast television network Univision has decided to revisit the Orlando nightclub shooting in explicit detail for the  true crime series “Crónicas De Sábado.” 

 

The shooting massacre took place last June at the popular gay venue Pulse and resulted in the death of 49 people. An additional 50 people were injured. A lone gunman, Omar Mateen, was responsible for the shooting and was killed by police.

 

The episode recreating the event is called “Baño De Sangre,” or “Blood Bath." According to reports, the show uses actors and special effects to depict the massacre in gory detail. Interviews with survivors will be included in the show. 

 

Many people were upset with the news, but Univision stood by its decision.

 

“Univision has set out to create a report that is deeply respectful of the many people whose lives were impacted by this tragedy, and, at the same time, is faithful to the facts underlying this horrible crime,” the company said in a statement.

 

“It’s a journalistic project,” added Jose Zamora, senior vice president of strategic communications at Univision. “People are upset by a promo. That promo doesn’t represent the entire program.”

 

“Re-enactments are damaging to a community still healing, and they were clearly not produced with the intent to assist us in that journey," countered Carlos Carbonell, co-convener of the LGBTQ+ Alliance in Orlando. "To take our story and turn it into a sensationalist piece is unconscionable. We will react and respond and will not back down until the show is pulled nationwide.”

 

Barbara Poma, the owner of the Pulse, said the recreation showed a  “lack of respect for these grieving families” and was “incomprehensible.”

 

The Pulse themed episode airs tonight.
