James Franco is back in yet another gay-themed project. Yes, the supposedly straight actor is starring in the queer movie I Am Michael, a biopic about a journalist who chooses the bible over his sexuality.
The movie is actually a few years old. It started making the rounds at film festivals back in 2015, but is finally getting a wider release. The story is about Michael Glatze (played by Franco), a one-time gay rights activist who created Young Gay America magazine. However, in the late 2000s things shifted in Glatze's life following a health scare and he claimed to have cured his homosexuality by becoming a Christian.
Zachary Quinto is Franco's boyfriend. The relationship between the two is filled out by a third in the form of Tyler (Charlie Carver). Both actors are gay in real life.
The movie is getting mixed reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 68%, stating "I Am Michael takes a determinedly balanced approach to its complex subject, and although the results don't always add up, they're anchored by strong work from James Franco."
Watching someone struggle with their sexuality for 102 minutes doesn't sound like much fun. We'd rather spend that time working up a sweat with one of the actors from the movie!
