Out actor
Matt Bomer has landed a role in the upcoming film
Anything.
In the movie, Bomer plays a transgender female sex worker who befriends a man who recently lost his wife. The movie is based on a play by Timothy McNeill.
Not everyone is pleased that Bomer got the part, with some people arguing that the role should have gone to a trans person (instead of a cisgender male).
Transgender Sense8 actress Jamie Clayton took to Twitter to express her frustration. "I really hope you choose to do some actual good for the trans community one day," she posted to Bomer.
Someone else tweeted: "Cis actor Matt Bomer will play trans sex worker in a new film [because] cis people need awards." Ouch.
Others felt differently.
One person asked, "Is pigeonholing trans actors into only playing trans roles good for the community?"
"Your argument is BS. Matt played a straight man in White Collar ... by your rationale, he should only play gay characters," another argued.
Of course, this issue isn't new. Eddie Redmayne and Jared Leto were attacked for playing trans characters in 2015’s The Danish Girl and 2013’s The Dallas Buyers Club, respectively. Both men were later nominated for Academy Awards for these roles, with Leto winning Best Supporting Actor in 2014.
