Burt Reynolds has always been known for being a bit of a dick, but this takes the cake.
During a recent interview on a British TV show, Reynolds argued that Sheen "deserves" HIV because of his sex life.
“His father’s a very, very decent man and a dear friend of mine," Reynold's said to ITV's Loose Women (similar to the US-produced The View and The Talk). “I feel bad for him. But Charlie, I don’t feel bad for him. He’s getting what he deserves. If you’re going to misbehave like that, then they’re going to get you.”
Ouch!
Last month, Sheen came out about living with HIV. He said he did so to end both tabloid rumors and extortion attempts. He has maintained that he never took part in unsafe sex, and was up front about his health to all partners; however, some of the women he has been with have claimed they were not aware he was HIV+ when they hooked up with him.
One ex-girlfriend has even filed a lawsuit claiming he lied to her about it.
Shaun Griffin of the Terrence Higgins Trust in the UK took issue with Reynolds' statements. “The comments made today on Charlie Sheen’s HIV status are completely unnecessary," Griffin argued. “It is not right for anybody to be deemed ‘deserving’ of HIV, or any health condition, nor is it correct for any of us to judge how a person becomes HIV positive, or speculate on its inevitability.”
Reynolds is out of line. Sheen could have made better choices and has to take responsibility for his decisions, but to say he - or anyone - deserves to be infected with HIV is simply mean-spirited.
