Yesterday, BBC announced Peter Capaldi would portray the newest incarnation of the title character in its popular sci-fi franchise Doctor Who. He will be the 12th actor to play the role since the show premiered 1963, and will take over as the show celebrates its 50th anniversary.
The show actually went on an extended hiatus in 1996, but came back stronger than ever in 2005. It's popularity grew with a strong writing of Queer as Folk creator Russell T Davies (He even added a gay element to Doctor Who by introducing time-traveller Jack Harkness - played by gay actor John Barrowman - who later received his own series, Torchwood.)
Christopher Eccleston (pictured, left) portrayed a Doctor with an edge, complete with a leather coat. Then came David Tennant (middle), who mixed geekiness with a sly sense of humor. And most recently, the role was taken over by Matt Smith who tried to make the bow tie sexy.
