Google weak on supporting gay Pride month?

Google's gay pride doodleDo a search on Google referencing anything gay and you get treated to a small rainbow next to the search bar. This is Google's nod to Pride month.

However, there are people in the gay community wondering why Google is being so timid in its support of the LGBT community. Some feel that Google, known for creating unique reworkings of its logo on the homepage to celebrate everything from Halloween and Christmas to  Paul Cezanne's 172 birthday and Pac-Man's 30th anniversary.

The Atlantic's Nicholas Jackson thinks Google should offer an explicit gay doodle on the homepage, and only hide the doodle for anti-gay searches. "[Google] should keep the six-color rainbow, a symbol universally associated with gay pride ever since San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker created it 33 years ago, from appearing on the pages of those who are still opposed to gay rights. And keep Google from having to deal with any backlash," he wrote.

“As you may imagine, it's difficult for us to choose which events to celebrate on our site, and have a long list of those we'd like to celebrate in the future," Google offered in reply.

“I just want the same treatment as Vivaldi, who was properly celebrated even 269 years after his death,” added Jackson.
