Susan Sarandon is not one to mince words. The actress - a supporter of gay rights - recently defended the TV show Glee for its use of the word ‘tranny.’ The word was used during the Halloween episode, which reworked the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) said the show went too far when it used the “slur” tranny. At the very least, there should have been a second character challenge the word's use, it said.
Sarandon, who appeared as Janet in the original Rocky Horror movie, defended the show and argued that the folks at GLAAD needed to stop being so reactionary. She told the New York Daily News: “What should they [Glee] have said? [GLAAD is] getting like PETA – way out of control.”
In response, GLAAD spokesman Richard Ferraro told the paper: "The word ‘tranny’ has become an easy punch line in popular culture and many still don’t realise that using the term is hurtful, dehumanizing and associated with violence."
