It must be slightly hellish for the boys running Grindr, balancing Apple's puritanical restrictions with the tendency for gay men, when networking online, to get down and dirty.
The phenomenally popular iPhone app is designed to let you know what other guys are in the vicinity, including their exact distance from you. You can hit someone up for a chat at any point, and take it from there.
Here's where the balancing act comes in. You can't post photos or text which could in any way be construed as erotic. In the past week Grindr has found it necessary to update its guidelines, listing 34 specific types of post that just aren't allowed.
Among the banned images:
- tight pants ("no outline of genitals through clothing")
- bananas or cucumbers ("sex props, including ... fruits and vegetables")
- bathhouse pics ("nudity covered up by a hat, towel or other means.")
You can't blame the Grindr guys. They're just trying to avoid being banished by Big Brother Apple. But it does beg the question, what does Steve Jobs have against sex, anyway?
The complete banned list is here.
