Canada is looking to end LGBT+ conversion therapy. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed that banning the abusive practice was one of the major priorities of his new government.
Trudeau advised the Minister of Justice and Attorney General David Lametti to ”amend the Criminal Code to ban the practice of conversion therapy and take other steps required with the provinces and territories to end conversion therapy in Canada”.
“This is a real opportunity for Canada to show leadership on the world stage when it comes to passing the strongest legislation in the world,"
explained Kristopher Wells, a professor and anti-conversion therapy advocate. "To clearly demonstrate that conversion therapy has no place in our society or civilization."
“Great to see the federal government has heard the loud request from LGBT+ Canadians, and many allies to ban conversion therapy in all provinces and territories across Canada," added Canadian politician
Spencer Chandra Herbert in a tweet. “I will work with the minister, and anyone else to see this horrible practice ended everywhere.”
The current Liberal government lost its majority in the recent elections. It should, however, have enough support to pass legislation to stop conversion therapy if it can stay in power long enough.
