Director J.J. Abrams is hinting that the movie franchise will finally feature some queer representation in the upcoming final film of the latest trilogy.
When The Force Awakens came out in 2015, fans were hoping that Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Finn (John Boyer’s) would come out as a gay couple. It has yet to be realized on screen.
Isaac said the characters have “a deep, deep connection” but explained that taking it to the next level was up to producers.
“The truth is, as a performer… I can only do so much, cause I don’t write the scripts, other than say I would think that that would be a great way for the story to go and a much more original one,” he explained. “But I think that, at least, what we can say is that it holds that potential.”
Abrams recently admitted that he saw Finn and Poe’s relationship as "a far deeper one than a romantic one."
"It is a deep bond that these two have, not just because of the trial by fire in which they met, but also because of their willingness to be as intimate as they are, as afraid as they, as unsure as they are, and still be bold, and still be daring and brave,” he said.
He wouldn't say that they would end up together, but confirmed there would be some LGBT representation coming up.
“[I]n the case of the LGBTQ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they’re being represented in the film,” he said. “I will say I’m giving away nothing about what happens in the movie. But I did just say what I just said.”
