UK stops work on online age-verification system

Age verification onlineThe UK will no longer try to block people from accessing porn.

Digital Secretary Nicky Morgan revealed that the government has decided the idea is simply not feasible at this point in time. The initial plan was to make adults register for a porn site passport to verify their age before accessing adult content. Websites that refused to confirm a user's age faced being blocked by Internet Service Providers, or having their access to their business-related bank accounts blocked.

One issue was whether or not such a ban would even work at keeping minors off X-rated sites. There was also a big question about how to maintain the privacy of people who signed up for verification.

Writing to the British parliament, Morgan explained that the government would heighten its focus on its new “online harms” regulation to address issues caused by minors accessing porn sites.

“The government’s commitment to protecting children online is unwavering," she said. "Adult content is too easily accessed online and more needs to be done to protect children from harm."

There's always a possibility a future government will try again, but for now access to porn in the UK will not face new hurdles.
