Wham! classic being turned into a holiday movie

Last ChristmasIt might be a little early to be talking about a certain holiday in December, but the Wham! hit "Last Christmas" is being made into a movie.

It's being produced and co-written by actress Emma Thompson and had the approval of George Michael before his untimely death in 2016.

“When I came on board, George was up for it, he’d already signed something to say yes, but he’d passed away,” co-writer Bryony Kimmings said

She added that in the script she wrote she included many queer characters, though she isn't sure how many will survive the final edit.

“[When] I wrote my draft, I tried to slip in some trans people and make sure there was queer politics in there,” she said. “I don’t know how much of that remains! But I hope that there’s quite an element of queer in there, because you know it’s the story -- it’s based on the song, 'Last Christmas.'

“George was such a massive advocate for gay rights – and a massive gay himself! – so I hope there’s a gay narrative in there.”

"Last Christmas" is the biggest selling single in UK chart history not to reach #1. The single was also never intended to be a Christmas song; it was written about a failed relationship, referencing the holiday season as the relationship ends. (Let's hope the movie is a little more cheery than that!)

A cast and release date have yet to be determined, but you'll probably have to wait until next Christmas before it hits theaters.
