It might be a little early to be talking about a certain holiday in December, but the Wham! hit "Last Christmas" is being made into a movie.
It's being produced and co-written by actress Emma Thompson and had the approval of George Michael before his untimely death in 2016.
She added that in the script she wrote she included many queer characters, though she isn't sure how many will survive the final edit.
“[When] I wrote my draft, I tried to slip in some trans people and make sure there was queer politics in there,” she said. “I don’t know how much of that remains! But I hope that there’s quite an element of queer in there, because you know it’s the story -- it’s based on the song, 'Last Christmas.'
“George was such a massive advocate for gay rights – and a massive gay himself! – so I hope there’s a gay narrative in there.”
"Last Christmas" is the biggest selling single in UK chart history not to reach #1. The single was also never intended to be a Christmas song; it was written about a failed relationship, referencing the holiday season as the relationship ends. (Let's hope the movie is a little more cheery than that!)
A cast and release date have yet to be determined, but you'll probably have to wait until next Christmas before it hits theaters.
