Thomas Dekker, who appeared for a short time on the hit series
Heroes (which ran from 2006 to 2010), has come out as gay
and married. However, he said he felt forced to do so because
Heroes' executive producer, Bryan Fuller, hinted at Dekker's sexuality during an acceptance speech at the Outfest Achievement Awards last week.
During the speech, Fuller referenced an unnamed actor who, though gay in real life, refused to continue playing a character if said character came out of the closet. Instead, the character stayed straight but was eventually written out of the show.
Of course, this created a lot of questions about who Fuller was talking about.
Dekker took to social media to deal with the speculation: ‘My sexual orientation once again came into question this week when a prominent gay man used an awards acceptance speech to 'out' me. While he did not mention me by name, the explicit details of his reference made it easy for the public and media to connect the dots."
He added: ‘While it is an odd situation, I thank him because it presents a prime opportunity for me to publicly say that I am indeed a man who proudly loves other men. In fact, this April, I married my husband and I could not be happier."
Interestingly, Dekker did end up playing a queer male in the short lived Fox series Backstrom in 2015.
Dekker took Fuller to task to not giving him the freedom to choose the best time to open up about a matter that is so personal.
‘Sexuality and who you love is a deeply personal and complicated thing," Dekker pointed out. "For some of us, it takes time to cultivate, discover and conclude."
