On June 12, 2016, Omar Mateen entered the crowded Orlando LGBT nightclub Pulse and murdered 49 people. He was later shot and killed by police.

 

Hoping to encourage others to take time to remember those who died or were wounded, city officials in Orlando have declared June 12 "Orlando United Day."

 

"This announcement formally dedicates June 12 to the memory and honor of the 49 innocent lives taken at Pulse, reaffirms the community's commitment to survivors and loved ones, as well as recognizes the global compassion and love displayed in the wake of the tragedy," the city said in a press release.

 

It added: "Orlando Mayor Dyer and Orange County Mayor Jacobs are encouraging residents and businesses both locally and around the world to join with others in acts of love and kindness to continue the unity that followed the tragedy."

 

Several events are planned for that day, including a memorial service at the site of the former nightclub.
