There are many people out there who are not looking forward to the end of the week. Why? Well, on January 20 Donald Trump goes from President-Elect to actual, finger-on-the-button President of the United States of America.
Anti-Trump marches have been planned for the week. Several politicians have announced they will not be attending the ceremony. Celebrities have refused to perform. And now Broadway stars have announced plans to live-stream a concert as counter-programming to the televised event.
"
Concert for America: Stand Up, Sing Out! " will be held at The Town Hall in Manhattan on Jan. 20 and help raise money for various human rights organizations. Tickets have already sold out, but it will be streamed live on Facebook.
And the list of stars is huge, from Chita Rivera, Kelli O'Hara and Billy Porter to Andrea Martin, Bebe Neuwirth and Rosie O'Donnell.
Jessie Mueller will be singing "Beautiful" from her Tony Award-winning role as Carole King.
"Hate comes from a lack of love, so we can't fight it with more of its own toxicity, we have to fill it with love," she said. "There are really big things at stake. Things we can't save or solidify or safeguard alone. We have to think bigger, we have to ask for help, we have to reach out to one another and band together. I hope this concert can be an example of that."
Proceeds from the event will being shared by Planned Parenthood, Southern Poverty Law Center, National Immigration Law Center and the Sierra Club Foundation.
