Reprieve for Uganda's kill gays bill

Uganda's notorious anti-gay bill, which mandates the death penalty in some cases, died on the order paper, after the country's Parliament adjourned without a debate.

Edward Ssekandi Kiwanuk, the parliamentary speaker, ruled there was no time to take up the bill this session.

But the anti-gay bill could come back up for debate in the next parliament: David Bahati, the MP who sponsored the bill, had said he would try to move it forward in the next session if it was not voted on this time.

Human rights groups had lobbied hard against the bill, fearing it would foment hatred and lead to more open violence against gays and lesbians.

It makes you count your blessings, doesn't it?
