Since 2000, BananaGuide's mission has been to entertain and inform gay men about web-based porn through our blog, galleries, site reviews and web directory.
Site Reviews
BananaGuide was the first gay site ever to provide thorough and honest reviews of gay
membership sites. Since then the adult web has evolved and review sites are now commonplace.
BananaGuide remains the leader in the field, providing the most detailed and honest reviews of
high quality gay porn sites available anywhere.
News & Views
In our blog BG covers not only amusing and titillating sex stories and porn
gossip, but the seemingly endless attempts by government and right-wing religious
leaders to censor the porn that you enjoy. We believe this is part of our role as a
pro-consumer and pro-porn advocate.
Porn Surfing 101
The web is populated with hundreds of thousands of gay porn sites and blogs, each
competing for your attention. You can waste a lot of time aimlessly surfing the free stuff. And you
can waste your hard earned money if you join the wrong pay site. Porn Surfing 101 is a
consumer-oriented guide designed to help you navigate through the web of membership sites
with as few hassles as possible.
Galleries
For your pleasure, each day we post free galleries from top quality membership sites.
Enjoy!
Directory
BananaGuide also has a very selective web directory of the better gay adult resources in several
categories, from DVD review sites to studio sites to porn blogs and hook-up sites. (The
previous Fab Free Sites is now a site of its own, FabFreeSites.com)
How BananaGuide makes money
BananaGuide makes money in much the same way other free adult sites do. Membership sites pay commissions to sites that send customers their way. If you, after reading one of our site reviews, decide to join that site we will receive a commission.
It's in our interest to provide you with honest reviews because we want you to have a positive experience at any site we recommend and to continue to visit BananaGuide regularly.
Reviews of BananaGuide
Response to BananaGuide has been overwhelmingly positive. Check out these reviews.
The BG Team
BananaGuide's founder and editor, Trevor, has had a long-standing interest in the web. He holds a Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies, which partially explains the level of organization of BananaGuide.
Trevor started working in Web design in 1996, while employed as a librarian at an Ontario government agency. Feeling unchallenged by his work he felt the time was right to try his hand at a new venture. His combination of information management and web design skills made an Internet-related career shift the obvious choice.
Knowing full well that the most reliable means of actually making a living would be by entering the adult market, the radical idea of a gay consumers' guide to web porn was born.
BananaGuide went live in December 2000 and Trevor worked solo for the first
while. In 2003, Trevor's partner in life, Steve, joined him as a full partner in the site.
Since then, two more staff -- Terry and Daryl -- have joined the BananaGuide team.
BananaGuide is headquartered in Toronto, Canada. You can contact us through our feedback form.
If you have a website, blog or social networking page, we'd be pleased as punch if you would link to BananaGuide with a text link or one of the banners below. The link should be to: www.bananaguide.com . Thank you for supporting BG!

Sites are scored out of 100. If we find that a site scores less than 65 we do not publish a
review.
| CONTENT | 65 | QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF THE SITE'S CONTENT |
| Quality | 30 | Overall quality of the site's video and photo content including technical quality, composition and sound quality. |
| Quantity | 10 | Relative amount of content in the site (200 exclusive videos or a great deal of non-exclusive and third-party content = full marks) |
| Exclusive | 10 | Relative amount of exclusive content in the site (200 exclusive 10 minute videos = full marks) |
| Personality | 5 | The voice and uniquess of the site as reflected in text descriptions of the models and sessions and model interviews. |
| Media Options | 5 | Number of choices provided for viewing video (formats / speeds) and photos (multiple sizes, zip files, slideshows) |
| Updates | 5 | Frequency of original content updates (3 major updates a week = full marks) |
| DESIGN | 15 | NAVIGATION, LOOK AND FEEL |
| Navigation | 10 | Navigation between sections of the site and within video and photo galleries. |
| Aesthetics | 5 | Use of color, graphics and space makes the site pleasing to the eye. |
| RESPECT | 20 | FAIRNESSS AND PRICING |
| Fairness | 10 | No misleading or unfair tactics. It is very easy for a
site to score full points on this criteria. Sites lose points for having: - little or no technical help on the site - misleading claims in tour - too many upsells - no price information until you have entered personal information - automatic sign-up to another site when you join - any other tactic we consider unfair |
| Price | 5 | Relative cost of a monthly recurring membership (less than $20 = full points) |
| Value | 5 | Price score compared to content score |
BananaGuide supports safer sex in porn. That means we think it's better to see condoms on guys when they're fucking. We understand that you might enjoy bareback porn and may not understand why we believe it is important for porn models to practice safer sex, so we've put together a FAQ on this important issue.
Why does BananaGuide care?
Because we believe it is the responsibity of the gay adult industry to protect the health of its
models. Even with vastly improved treatments, HIV/AIDS remains the single greatest threat to gay
men's health today. Though manageable, AIDS is still a chronic, incurable condition with serious
health consequences. And the use of condoms when fucking is the single most effective way to prevent
HIV transmission during sex.
Don't studios and websites take precautions to make sure models paired for a
condomless fuck have the same HIV status?
Some do and some don't. There is no consistent policy among bareback producers for pairing models.
Some try to use only models that are HIV positive; others try to use only models that are HIV
negative. Some test their models; others do not. Some ask their models what their HIV status is;
others do not. Furthermore, some studios may state that they have a screening or testing policy,
when in reality they do not.
What if both models have tested negative?
There is a very big problem with HIV screening. During the earliest phase of HIV infection the
body's immune system has not kicked in to produce antibodies that can be detected in a blood test.
Therefore someone infected within the past four months can test negative yet still pass the virus to
his partner. True screening requires that a model test negative, wait for four months (without
having high-risk sex) and then test negative again. This is impractical because it depends on a
model who is planning on having unprotected sex onscreen not having high-risk sex for four
months.
What if both models have tested positive?
While many HIV positive men choose to have unprotected sex with partners they believe are also HIV
positive, AIDS experts still consider this to be high-risk sex. There are many strains of HIV and a
positive man can infect his positive partner with a second strain, or with another STD, leading to
further medical complications.
What about "committed boyfriends?"
Many questions arise when the models paired for a condomless fuck are "boyfriends." How
long have they been boyfriends? What is their agreed arrangement regarding sex outside of the
relationship? Have they both kept to that arrangment? Have they both been tested for HIV? Are they
truthful with their partner? And why are committed boyfriends making a porno anyway?
What about straight guys?
There are some illogical assumptions made about "straight" models. Since they aren't
"gay" they can't get HIV? And since they can't get HIV they don't need to bother with
condoms? Men who have sex with men but do not identify as gay are just as likely to be HIV+.
What about "virgins" or "first timers"?
There is no way to verify that a model hasn't had anal sex before and is therefore probably
HIV-. Sometimes models tell fibs and sometimes porn producers just want to create a fantasy for
their viewers.
Can't 18 year-old models decide for themselves?
While twink bareback may appeal to the "young and innocent" fantasy, young people are
more likely to take higher risks and are easier to manipulate. Young models may be getting into
situations without fully weighing the consequences of their actions.
There are some bareback producers who stoop to luring young models into having unprotected sex by
providing drugs to lower their inhibitions and then "forgetting" to bring condoms to the
shoot.
As for twink bareback originating from Eastern Europe and Russia, hungry young men will do what
they have to for money. Throw in a few more bucks and an impoverished model will be willing to have
condomless sex. And if he is infected with HIV his prospects for obtaining proper medical care and
community support are poor.
Can watching porn affect people's attitudes or sexual behavior?
We think that individual attitudes and behaviors are affected by media,
including entertainment; safer sex on the screen reinforces the idea that sex with condoms is hot.
What can I do?
Porn is market-driven. As a consumer be aware that your choices do make a difference. Even if
you do enjoy viewing bareback porn, try not to write off all the other great porn available to you
just because of a little latex.
ABOUT THE SAFERATING
What does SafeRated mean?
SafeRated "High" - the site protect its models through the appropriate use of
condoms.
SafedRated "Medium" - the site carries third-party bareback
content (ie plug-ins) or a very small number of original bareback video scenes.
SafeRated "Low" - the site carries a significant amount of bareback video.
Do you take other types of higher risk sex, such as cumming in the mouth, into
consideration?
All sex has some risk to it. While cumming in the mouth is definitely considered a higher risk
activity the unsafest sex by far is fucking without a condom. The SafeRating applies only to whether
condoms are used during anal sex scenes.
Does the SafeRating affect the total score a site receives?
No. The SafeRating is a separate rating and does not contribute to the total score out of 100 that
we rank sites on.
Does the SafeRating affect how BananaGuide promotes sites?
Yes. While we treat all sites equally within the review section of BananaGuide, sites that are
SafeRated "High" and score well out of 100 do receive significantly more promotion
throughout the site.
