Rami Malek lands role as Freddie Mercury

Rami Malek

Rami Malek will soon be slipping into Freddie Mercury's shoes (and pants and tank top).

The Emmy winning actor -- currently starring as the lead in the series Mr. Robot --  will be appearing in Bohemian Rhapsody, a film about the late singer's life and death, and its impact on his band Queen.

Sacha Baron Cohen was initially selected for the role, but creative differences between him and Queen's guitarist Brian May resulted in Cohen leaving the production. Cohen later revealed that he wanted to explore Mercury's extreme lifestyle, whereas May wanted the focus to remain on the band as a whole.

That was in 2013, and until now there was little indication the movie was even going to happen.

Director Bryan Singer has been approached to direct. (Let's hope he does a better job than that last X-men movie!)

As it has taken several years to get to this point, expect the movie to be released sometime after the year 2033.
